We are located 15 miles north of the Mackinac Bridge, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the heart of grouse country. We are a small, blue collar type kennel that specializes in excellent foot hunting gun dogs. My dad got his first pair of gun dogs in 1939, and we've had them ever since. I've been working dogs for over 50 years myself. Our goal is to produce extremly high quality gun dogs for a very fair price.
Over the years I have been blessed to have been tutored by two of the best Dogmen I 've ever known; my Dad & the late great Hall of Famer, Joe Corullo. For my money, Joe Corullo was as good of a dogman as ever lived. He was without a doubt the best dog breeder I 've ever met. Most of my breeding and training philosophies come from my 35 year friendship with him. I will always use his motto " Every dog has to earn there right to stay in your kennel, or all you will ever have is a bunch of pets."
At Black Point, we have outstanding bloodlines that produce like pups. We don't believe in brood matrons, every dog has to prove its worthiness. We don't breed color schemes or fads, just high quality gun dogs. We have no use for runaway idiots or ankle biters. Our dogs are used on wild birds & guiding at game preserves.
We will not keep a bird dog that can't consistantly handle ruffed grouse (the toughest game bird there is). We feel any dog that can handle ruffed grouse, can handle any game bird. We also hunt in North Dakota three weeks a year for pheasant, sharptail, and huns. Additionally, we do not keep a beagle that can't handle deep powder snow on a very cold day or runs off game.
Our Shorthairs are mostly hall of fame breeding through Dixieland Rusty; The greatest producer of all time with over 70 field champions, and three time national champion Rawhides Clown the second greatest producer in the history of the breed, up very close. They all are athletic, natural retrievers, with plenty of bottom, and great personalities. I mostly hunt wild birds, I have absolutely no use for a dog that has to be hacked & hollered at. Talking to a dog usually spooks wild birds. I usually hunt 2 - 4 dogs at a time, and I don't expect to have to hollar or whistle hardly at all. A well trained dog shouldn't have to be talked to much !
Our beagles are all linebred through Black Point Midge, FC Black Point Bessie, FC Colby Hill Flora, IFC Madge Scott, and IFC Trakarab Pacesetter. They are line running snowdogs.
We usually breed a couple litters a year. I love raising & socializing a nice litter of pups, almost as much as I enjoy training young dogs. Each fall we run our dogs against professional guide dogs and field trial winning dogs, on wild birds. Our dogs have always more than held their own.
If you are looking for a classy, natural foothunting gundog, with a personality that would also make a great housedog, consider us ! Please contact us for numerous quality references and all dogs are guaranteed for hunting ability and health.
